Terms of use
Last updated 13 August 2026. Using Otoku means agreeing to these. They are short on purpose.
What Otoku is
Otoku is an expense tracker for families and households. You type in what you spend; it keeps the record, adds it up, and gives you a game layer for the habit of showing up. That is all it is.
Otoku is not a bank, not a payment service and not a financial adviser. It does not connect to any bank account, hold any money, move any money, or see any transaction you did not type in yourself. Nothing in the app is financial, tax, investment or legal advice, and none of it is a substitute for advice from someone qualified to give it.
Your account
- One account, one person. Sign in with a code sent to your email address, or with Google. There is no password.
- Because there is no password, whoever can read your email can sign in as you. Keeping your email account secure is the part that is yours.
- Use an email address you actually control, and tell us if you lose control of it. Do not sign in as somebody else.
Age
Otoku is meant for families, and teenagers are expected users. You must be at least 13 to have an account. If you are under 18, use Otoku with a parent or guardian’s knowledge.
Otoku does not ask your age and has no way to check it. That is a choice, and the consequence is in your favour: because we cannot tell who is a child, we treat every account as one. If you tell us that an account belongs to a child under 13, we delete it.
Households, and what you share
A household is a shared ledger. Anything you log in one is visible to the other people in it: the amount, the date, and the category. Marking an entry private hides the note, the merchant, the category and the tags — it does not hide the amount, the date, or that it was you. Decide what to put in a shared household on that basis.
Invite links let anybody holding the link join the household they are for, until they expire or are revoked. Send them to people you mean to let in.
A guardian relationship needs both people to act: one asks, the other accepts, and either can see that it exists at any time. A guardian can see a dependent’s spending in that household and cannot write anything on their behalf. Do not use guardianship to watch an adult who has not understood what they accepted.
What you write stays yours
Your expenses, notes, names, goals and everything else you enter belong to you. You give us only the permission we need to run the service for you — to store what you wrote, show it to you and to the people you shared a household with, add it up, and back it up. We do not use it for anything else, we do not sell it, and we do not use it to train anything.
The game layer is worth nothing
XP, levels, streaks, badges, creatures and the Kura are a score. They are not money, not a currency, not credit, not a balance, and not redeemable for anything. They cannot be bought, sold, transferred or cashed out, and they carry no value of any kind outside the app.
A creature’s stage comes from the number of days you logged, never from how much you spent, and its size is a readout of spending that is not scored or ranked. This is deliberate: Otoku is built to reward tracking, and nothing in it is designed to make you spend more. If you ever find a mechanic that does, tell us — that is a bug, and we will treat it as one.
Accuracy, and what the numbers mean
The totals Otoku shows are arithmetic over what you typed. If you type it wrong, or do not type it at all, the total is wrong, and there is no bank feed to correct it against. Do not rely on Otoku as a system of record for anything that matters legally — tax, a claim, a dispute.
Otoku counts in one unit and does not record which currency you meant. It shows a $ because a number needs a mark in front of it, and that mark is not a claim about any particular currency. There is no conversion in the app: whatever you type is what is stored and what is added up.
So if you spend abroad and type the number on the receipt, Otoku will add it to your totals as though it were the same unit as everything else. It will look right and it will be wrong, and nothing in the app can tell. Otoku is not built for spending across two currencies, and if that is what you need, it is not the tool.
Using it properly
Do not:
- try to reach data belonging to a household you are not in, or probe for a way to;
- use somebody else’s account, or set up a household for someone who has not agreed to it;
- put unlawful, abusive or harassing content into a note, a nickname, a household name or a savings goal — other people read those;
- attack, overload or reverse-engineer the service, or automate abuse of it;
- use Otoku to monitor an adult who has not knowingly agreed to it, or to control somebody’s finances against their will.
If you find a security problem, tell us at otoku@fluffycornie.com before telling anyone else, and give us a reasonable chance to fix it. We will not come after you for looking.
What it costs
Nothing. Otoku is free, there is no paid tier, and there is nowhere in the product to enter a card — it does not take payments at all. If that ever changes, we will say so clearly and in advance, and existing accounts will not start being charged for something they already had.
Availability
Otoku is early software, run by a very small team. It is provided as it is, with no promise of uptime, no guarantee that it is free of faults, and no guarantee that a given feature will still be there next month. We will not delete your data to make a point, and if we ever have to shut the service down we will give you notice and a way to take your data with you.
Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. That is true of every service, and it is more true of a free one.
Ending it
You can stop using Otoku whenever you like, leave a household without deleting your account, or delete the account entirely. Deleting it is in the app, under You in the Your data section, and it is immediate. Take a copy of your data first if you want one — the download is in the same place, and the deletion screen offers it to you before you confirm. What deletion does, including the one thing it keeps and why, is set out in the privacy notice. You can also write to otoku@fluffycornie.com and we will do it for you.
We can suspend or close an account that is being used to attack the service or to harm another person. We will tell you why, unless telling you would make the harm worse.
Liability
Otoku is provided without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We are not liable for money you lost, decisions you made, or arguments you had on the strength of a number this app showed you. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including for death, personal injury, or fraud.
Governing law
Otoku is operated from Singapore, and these terms are governed by Singapore law. If you are a consumer somewhere whose law gives you rights you cannot sign away, you keep them.
Changes
If these terms change in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top tells you which version you are reading.
